What actually changes how a board sounds

The order of influence

Roughly, from most to least effect on sound:

  1. The case — its material, mass and how much empty volume sits under the board
  2. The plate — what the switches mount into, and how much it flexes
  3. Keycap material and thickness
  4. Whether the empty space is filled
  5. The switch itself

Most people work that list in reverse, which is why switch swaps disappoint.

Why the case dominates

A keyboard is a resonating box. A dense case with little internal volume produces a shorter, lower sound; a thin plastic case with a large cavity rings. No switch choice overcomes that geometry.

The cheap experiment

Before buying anything, take the board apart and put a layer of foam in the cavity. It is the largest change available for the least money, and it will tell you whether you actually dislike the sound or just the emptiness.
